Mexican singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez was born on 16 April 1971 and died on 31 March 1995. She is well-known as Selena in the global music industry, and often has been called "the queen of Tejano music". Selena was the youngest child of a Mexican-American musical family. Her father, Abraham Quintanilla, played in the band "Los Dinos" or "The Boys" and taught all his children to sing in Spanish. Selena began performing with other relatives at the family restaurant Pappagallo at the age of eight. Lately, she began taking classes through the American School, a correspondence school for artists. She graduated in 1989 and enrolled at Pacific Western University as a correspondence student taking business classes. Selena released her first album at the age of twelve. Later, in 1987, she took the award for Female Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards and landed a recording contract with EMI a few years later. Her fame continued to grow throughout the early 1990s, especially in all Spanish-speaking countries. Her album "Selena live" won a Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Album at the 36th Grammy Awards, and in 1994 other of her albums - "Amor prohibido" was nominated for Grammy again and produced four number one Spanish hits. Selena attained further notability in the United States and Mexico after one of her fans has murdered her at the age of 23. Since 12 April 1995, two weeks after her death, George W. Bush, then the governor of Texas, has declared her birthday as a special "Selena Day" in Texas. Lately, Warner Brothers make a film based on her life with Jennifer Lopez, in her role in 1997. Since June 2006, Selena has been commemorated with a museum and a bronze life-sized statue "Mirador de la Flor in Corpus Christi" in Texas. Both the statue and museum are visited by hundreds of fans each week.
