Tupac Amaru Shakur (June 16, 1971 - September 13, 1996) also known as 2Pac, Makaveli, The Don Kiluminati, or simply Pac, was an American artist renowned for his rap music, movie roles, poetry, and social activism. His name figures in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best selling hip-hop artist, with over 75 million of albums sold worldwide including over 50 million sales in the United States alone. The most common themes in the music of Tupac include growing up around violence and hardship in ghettos, racism, societal problems, and feuds with fellow rappers. His is known for his advocacy of political, economic, social, and racial equality as well as raw descriptions of violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and conflicts with the law. According to many fans, critics, and industry insiders rank Shakur as the greatest rapper ever. Tupac was a controversial figure who, almost immediately after his rap career began, found himself embroiled in both civil and criminal actions, and he became a popular target for rhetoric by ambitious politicians and even survived an initial attempt on his life. Shakur was fatally shot four times on September 7, 1996 in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, and died on September 13, 1996 of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest at University Medical Center, Las Vegas.
