U2 are a well-known and beloved rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Formed in 1976, they have consistently been one of the most popular music performers in the world since the middle of 80s. The band has sold over 170 million albums all over the world. With six number one albums in the United States and nine nine number one collections in the United Kingdom, U2 are one of the most successful bands of all time. They have received twenty-two Grammy awards, the most of any rock artist at recent days. The band was founded when Bono - vocals and guitar, The Edge - guitar, keyboards and vocals and Adam Clayton, playing the bass guitar decided to answer an advertisement, placed by Larry Mullen Jr - drums and percussion - at this time all of them were teenagers with limited musical skills. By the middle of 80s, however, they had already created four albums and developed a lot of devoted international performances, largely from extensive touring and from forging a trademark sound based upon the interesting echoing guitar of The Edge and the impassioned vocals of Bono. U2 soon reached a level of mega-stardom with their highly praised hit "The Joshua tree" from 1987. In the early 90s, they answered the dance and alternative music revolutions, criticism of their artistic image, and their own sense of musical stagnation, with the critically-acclaimed "Achtung baby" and the ground-breaking Zoo TV Tour. Although U2 had already developed a reputation for pursuing new musical paths with each new record, this time the band had ostensibly re-invented themselves, and this surprising experimentation was to continue for the rest of the 90s. In the early years of the 21st century, U2 have returned to a more traditional sound while maintaining some influence of their previous musical explorations, and continue to enjoy the highest level of commercial and critical success. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine determined them as number twenty-two on their list of the "100 greatest artists of all time".
