How to copy ringtones, wallpapers and other fun stuff to your phone for free ?
Wouldn't be superb to have a new ringtone to reflect the mood of each new day, or to be able to change the background picture on your phone, whenever you feel like it? It's free and very easy, but you have to learn how to copy information from a computer to your phone. You can copy anything you want, such as music, ringtones, photos, or useful applications from your PC to your phone. This technique is based on the use of a removable memory card, but there are other methods for transferring data, such as Bluetooth,USB cable or infrared. The advantage of the memory card technique is that it cannot be restricted by any software, connection or service provider, and the procedure is principally the same, regardless of the phone model.
Before starting, you have to be sure, that the phone has:
- A smart phone with removable memory card, or a camera phone.
- A computer with built-in memory card reader, or a memory card reader with a USB cable.
- USB port in your computer for the memory card reader which is free.
You can copy music you have extracted from your CDs, or photos you have snapped with your digital camera, as long as they are stored on your computer's hard disk.
1.You must plug your memory card reader into the free USB port on your computer.
2.You have to remove the memory card from your phone. If you can't find the memory card on the side of your phone, open the battery cover and take a look there. Memory cards can be hidden under batteries.
3.You have to insert your memory card into the reader, or if you have a memory card slot in your laptop computer, insert the card in there. Wait for a while for a new window to pop up on your computer screen. If nothing happens, you have to remove the memory card, turn it upside down and stick it back into the reader.
4.The new window on your computer screen will question you what you want to do with the new Disk Drive. Scroll down the window and choose Explorer. Select Explorer for listing the contents of your memory card.
Using the Explorer application, locate the object on your computer that you want to copy onto your phone. If you haven't created and named your own folder and subfolder hierarchy and names, look for objects in folders that are labeled "My Documents", "My Music" or "My Pictures".
5.If you want to succeed when copying things to your phone you have to do the following things - the phone anticipates to find ringtones in one folder, wallpapers in another, and other things in their respective folders. Everything has its place and you have to know where to copy the objects onto the phone's memory card. If you don't know where to copy them, the phone won't recognize the new things at all. You have to be very careful with folders and files. If you aren't absolutely sure what you are doing, then don't change any of the existing files and folders on the memory card. Various phone models save information in different places, so you may have to do some exploring by yourself. The next locations are examples where a Symbian OS/Series 60 powered phone looks for music, pictures and applications.
5.a)Ringtones - you have to copy your ringtones from the computer to the Sounds folder on the memory card. WAV and MIDI audio files are excellent choices for ringtones, because they work on most phones. If your cell-phone can play MP3 ringtones, go ahead and try it. Before copying an MP3 song to the phone, it's a good idea to cut the song shorter so that it doesn't occupy unnecessary space in the phone memory - for example, Cdex software can do it for you or a program named MP3 Sound Cutter).
Select your new ringtone
5.b)Wallpaper/Background or Screen Savers pictures : you have to copy your images from the computer to the Images/Backgrounds folder on the memory card. JPG pictures are very good as background images. You can pick up the new BackgSoftware - copy the application from your computer to the memory card's main folder(for example, E:). Then install the new application on your phone. Launch File Manager software(Main menu - Tools folder in Series 60 phones) on the phone and locate your application. Underline the application and select install.
To install new applications - You have to know what you install and be very careful - there are software viruses for phones as well. When you have identified the source you want to copy, and the destination folder where you are going to copy, use the Explorer on your computer to drag and drop the object to the memory card.
6.Finally remove the memory card from the reader, put it back into your phone and make the final preparation: change the wallpaper, choose the new ringtone as the default sound, or install the application on your phone and you're done. |
