Virgin Mobile opened its service providing as a mobile network operator in November 1999. As they operate a virtual network providing a broad range of mobile communications services to their customers over T-Mobile's network under their non-exclusive, minimum ten-year term, telecommunications supply agreement with T-Mobile, signed in January 2004.

On 4 July 2006 ntl Incorporated(holding company of ntl Telewest) completed its acquisition of Virgin Mobile. On 8 February 2007 this joint-venture company was re-branded to Virgin Media.

The completion of this deal opens the first UK company which is offering a quadruple play to the customers. This new company is able to offer mobile and fixed line telephony, broadband internet and tv.
